How does it work?

Legally required

Did you know that employers are required to pay a severance payment at the end of a contract? Maybe due to your contract not having been renewed, because you had a zero-hours contract, or because you were fired. You can even qualify for a severance pay having worked only one day, or if you were still on probation.
